One of my favourite brushes is the 'Fan Brush'. This one ('Fanny') is over ten years old, it has a  lot of applications, for instance dry brushing - where you don't use a medium but dib-dib-dab-dab, great for nature where random details gives an overall effect of landscape.

Miniatures

True miniature art or painting in little is a genre that focuses on art (especially painting, engraving and sculpture) with a long history that dates back to the scribes of the medieval ages. Miniature art societies, such as the World Federation of Miniaturists (WFM), provide applicable definitions of the term. An often-used definition is that a piece of miniature art can be held in the palm of the hand, or that it covers less than 25 square inches or 100 cm². Subjects are depicted in 1/6 actual size, and in all paintings the spirit of miniaturisation should be maintained.

I have been honing my skills in the very old practice of miniatures. Painting on an 8"x8" canvas is great fun. Here is a selection of my latest attempts, one of the Melbourne Botanical Gardens, another of the hills synonymous with Geelong 'The You Yangs' then a Central Tasmanian landscape.

I believe I was thinking Van Gogh when I painted this miniature!
